Tech Professional Spotlight โ€” Kareem Desilva

Kareem Dasilva

Kareem Dasilva exemplifies the grit and grind that Memphians are known for. This year, he received the Entrepreneurial Excellence in Technology award at the BDPA 2024 National Conference and played a key role in revitalizing the San Francisco Robotics and BDPA chapter.

Kareem embodies the entrepreneurial spirit as the founder of Edesia, a mobile ordering app for food trucks and Urban Tech Developers which utilizes sensors to measure foot traffic. Recently, Kareem developed an AI Art assistant named Arthur designed to assist artists in realizing their ideas within minutes.

As a testament to his commitment to the community, Kareem has served as the national BDPA Vice President of Student Programs since 2021, facilitating initiatives such as the High School Coding Competition. In 2017, Kareem and Herve Aniglo conducted a drone programming camp for Memphis's kids. He also shares his expertise by delivering tech talks throughout Memphis, including notable events like the 2024 BDPA South Regional Conference and the Epicenter's Tech Insights Forum.

What we Missed

Connecting & Learning at the Memphis .NET Meetup

A big shoutout to Jeffrey Scarpace, a senior developer at Baker Donelson, for his insightful presentation on Handlebars.net, a powerful templating tool that allows you to create reusable templates with placeholders (like "Hello, !"). This feature is a game-changer for generating personalized content, like automating emails with names filled in automatically.

Web audio Beats and Hono at the Memphis Web Workers

It was super cool to watch Keenan Diggs spin some amazing beats using his coding project at the Web Workers Meetup at the Microsoft office. ๐ŸŽถ The way he merged web development with audio engineering was so inspiring. I used to gig around Memphis on my trombone, and I have a friend whoโ€™s an audio engineer who taught me a lot of the concepts that Keenan not only demonstrated but explained. Seeing that knowledge come alive with the Web MIDI and Web Audio APIs really hit home. Now, Iโ€™m motivated to build a project as cool as Keenan's one day!

Marco Cabreraโ€™s presentation on JavaScript runtimes and frameworks was awesome. He showcased the evolution from Node.js to the cutting-edge Bun runtime and Hono framework, and I learned so much about the performance benefits and best practices for building data-driven apps across different runtimes.

One thing I learned about Hono and Bun is how they are leading the charge in modernizing JavaScript development with an emphasis on speed and simplicity, especially in full-stack applications.
